In this randomized controlled trial of 483 patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia followed for 24 months, 4 patients (1.6%) in the control group (lifestyle modification only) developed episodes of gout arthritis. These patients had baseline serum uric acid levels above 7.0 mg/dL. The occurrence of gout episodes exclusively in the non-pharmacologically treated group highlights that patients with elevated uric acid should monitor for acute joint symptoms indicating potential gout flares.
