Limiting sexual partners – Cervical Cancer
Suggested2 studies

Fewer lifetime sexual partners linked to significantly lower cervical cancer risk

Across 2 studies encompassing over 6,300 women, limiting the number of sexual partners consistently reduced cervical cancer risk and oncogenic HPV exposure. A case-control study of 524 cervical cancer cases and 1,541 controls found women with four or more lifetime partners faced 70% higher cervical cancer risk (adjusted OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.2–2.2) after controlling for age, education, and behavioral factors. A Latin American screening study of 4,284 women confirmed that two or more lifetime partners nearly doubled oncogenic HPV prevalence (OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.6–2.4), with multiple recent partners also elevating risk (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.2–2.2). HPV positivity correlated directly with cervical disease severity, reaching 100% sensitivity for detecting invasive cancer. Reducing partner count lowers cumulative HPV exposure, the primary driver of cervical carcinogenesis.

This case-control study comparing 524 cervical cancer cases with 1541 controls found that women with ≥4 lifetime sexual partners had significantly elevated cervical cancer risk with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.7 (95% CI 1.2-2.2). The study population had a median of 2 lifetime sexual partners. Multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed the association remained significant after adjusting for confounding variables including age, education, and other behavioral factors.

Among 4,284 women screened in Latin America, those with two or more lifetime sexual partners had significantly higher oncogenic HPV prevalence (OR = 1.9; 95% CI 1.6–2.4) compared to women with fewer partners. Women reporting two or more sexual partners in the past 12 months also had elevated HPV prevalence (OR = 1.6; 95% CI 1.2–2.2). Overall HPV prevalence was 17.1%, ranging from 33.9% in women under 20 years to 11.0% in those over 41 years. HPV positivity correlated with cervical disease severity, with sensitivity reaching 100% for detecting invasive cancer.
