Multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs improve physical function and quality of life after breast cancer

Two studies—a systematic review and a non-randomized interventional trial—support rehabilitation exercise programs for breast cancer survivors. In the interventional study of 19 Portuguese survivors, participants in a multidisciplinary program combining psychoeducation with physiotherapy achieved statistically significant improvements in the EORTC QLQ-C30 physical function subscale compared to controls who received no intervention. The systematic review, drawing from multiple databases, found that 3-week rehabilitation programs produced beneficial effects on both physical and psychological health, with multidimensional approaches based on Engel's Psycho-Socio-Biological model improving psychological tension, physical complications, physical capacity, and overall quality of life. Given that cancer survivors can experience persistent symptoms more than 10 years post-treatment, structured rehabilitation programs addressing both physical and psychosocial dimensions offer meaningful, sustained benefit for breast cancer survivors.

In a non-randomized interventional study of 19 Portuguese breast cancer survivors (9 in the intervention group, 10 controls), participants receiving a multidisciplinary program combining psychoeducation with physiotherapy showed a statistically significant increase in the physical function subscale of the EORTC QLQ-C30 quality of life measure compared to pre-intervention scores. The control group receiving no intervention showed no comparable improvement in physical function. Assessment was conducted at two time points (pre- and post-intervention) using validated instruments including the EORTC QLQ-C30, BR-23 breast cancer module, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Cancer Coping Questionnaire, and Fear of Progression Questionnaire.

This systematic review examined rehabilitation programs for breast cancer patients across multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Google Scholar). The review found that a 3-week rehabilitation program demonstrated beneficial effects on both physical and psychological health in women with breast cancer. Studies applying Engel's Psycho-Socio-Biological model showed that multidimensional rehabilitation programs improved psychological tension, physical complications, physical capacity, and overall quality of life. The review notes that cancer survivors in England (estimated at nearly 2 million) experience symptoms persisting more than 10 years post-treatment, highlighting the sustained need for rehabilitation interventions.
